Zhan A novel external force called anisotropic virtual electric field (AVEF) is proposed for active contours by incorporating the geometric information of the image edge map into a virtual electric field (VEF) model. The proposed AVEF model has the advantage of preventing active contours from moving across object boundary’s weak edges with strong neighbors while keeping the desirable properties of the VEF model, such as large capture range and fast computation time. The experiments conducted on synthetic and real images show the high performance of the AVEF model on image segmentation. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Convolutional Virtual Electric Field for Image Segmentation Using Active Contours

Gradient vector flow (GVF) is an effective external force for active contours; however, it suffers from heavy computation load. The virtual electric field (VEF) model, which can be implemented in real time using fast Fourier transform (FFT), has been proposed later as a remedy for the GVF model. In this work, we present an extension of the VEF model, which is referred to as CONvolutional Virtua...

Electric field in hard superconductors with arbitrary cross section and general critical current law

The induced electric field E(x) during magnetic flux entry in superconductors with arbitrary cross section Ω and general critical current law, has been evaluated by integration along the vortex penetration paths. Nontrivial flux motion streamlines are obtained from a variational statement of the critical state, which takes the form of an optimization problem on the finite element dis-cretizatio...

Computer simulations of successful defibrillation in decoupled and non-uniform cardiac tissue.

AIM The aim of the present study is to investigate the origin and effect of virtual electrode polarization in uniform, decoupled and non-uniform cardiac tissue during field stimulation. METHODS A discrete bidomain model with active membrane behaviour was used to simulate normal cardiac tissue as well as cardiac tissue that is decoupled due to fibrosis and gap junction remodelling. Various uni...

The electric field distribution in the brain during TTFields therapy and its dependence on tissue dielectric properties and anatomy: a computational study.

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) are a non-invasive, anti-mitotic and approved treatment for recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients. In vitro studies have shown that inhibition of cell division in glioma is achieved when the applied alternating electric field has a frequency in the range of 200 kHz and an amplitude of 1-3 V cm(-1). Our aim is to calculate the electric field distributi...

Anisotropic contour completion

In this paper we introduce a novel application of the diffusion tensor for anisotropic image processing. The Anisotropic Contour Completion (ACC) we suggest consists in extending the characteristic function of the open curve by means of a degenerated diffusion tensor that prevents any diffusion in the normal direction. We show that ACC is equivalent to a dilation with a continuous elliptic stru...
